Heroes. We all have them. Some wear tights and masks, others are those who inspire us to be the best possible person we can be. A hero is someone who doesn’t look at the mistakes you’ve made as bad things but learning experiences, they help you to see the silver lining, and to know things will always be alright.
Heroes, aren’t supposed to leave you, but sometimes they have too. My hero you ask? It’s simple, my hero is my Grandpa. 2016 has proven to be a tough one for me when it comes to losing those I love. My Grandma Jo to start the year, and now, as the year closes, my Grandpa Sims. I have said it before, when you are little you convince yourself that your grandparents will never leave you, they are eternal when you are 5 years old, and they simply are not supposed to leave….ever. It is safe to say that my Grandpa Sims was my biggest fan. He never missed a sporting event, theater production, and he even came to a fashion show I put together when I was in college. He is a man that loved his family and he would do anything for them. He was desperately in love with my Grandma, and if you want relationship goals, look to them, 69 years of marriage and they celebrated every moment of it. There is not enough time in the world for me to explain to anyone how amazing this man was.
I have struggled with the selfishness that goes along with loosing someone you love so much, it’s not fair, it sucks, and I want him here with me right now. But I can’t have that. What I do have, in this moment, is amazing memories of my Grandpa Sims, and that is truly all I need. I am a lucky person to have been chosen to be his granddaughter, and I am who I am in part because of him.
My wedding day.
